    The serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D, blood test is the recognised gold standard. It reflects vitamin D from both sun exposure and diet, and is the marker your clinician will use to confirm your status.

    For most adults a 25(OH)D level of 30–50 ng/mL is considered sufficient. Levels of 20–29 ng/mL indicate insufficiency, and below 20 ng/mL is classified as deficiency.

    With appropriate supplementation, levels typically improve over 8–12 weeks. Your clinician will usually re-test at that point before moving you to a maintenance dose.

    No fasting is required for a standalone 25(OH)D test. If it is part of a wider panel, your clinician may advise fasting for the other markers.

    Some people can, but factors such as latitude, season, skin tone, sunscreen use and time spent indoors mean many do not. Testing is the only way to know your individual status.
