Helicobacter pylori is a spiral bacterium that colonises the lining of the stomach, often for decades and often without causing symptoms. In some people it produces chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers in the stomach or duodenum, and over the long term it raises the risk of gastric cancer. This blood test looks for the antibodies your immune system has produced against the organism.
Antibody testing is convenient: it needs only a blood sample, with no fasting and no stopping of acid-reducing medication. Its limitation is built into what it measures. Antibodies show that your immune system has met H. pylori, but they can stay in the blood for a long time after the bacterium has been successfully treated and cleared. A positive result therefore indicates infection at some point rather than proving bacteria are in your stomach today, and it cannot reliably separate current from past infection.
That single fact shapes how the test is used. It works as an initial, ruling-in test in someone who has never been treated. It does not work as a test of cure: if you have completed a course of eradication therapy, a positive antibody result does not mean the treatment failed. Confirming that the infection has gone, or that it is active in the first place, is done with a test that detects the organism itself — a stool antigen test, a urea breath test, or a biopsy taken at endoscopy.
