    About This Test

What the Dengue Fever Combined Panel, Rapid test tells you

This is a panel rather than a single test. It runs three dengue markers on one blood sample: the NS1 antigen, which is a protein the virus itself releases, and the IgM and IgG antibodies your immune system makes in response. Each becomes detectable at a different point in the illness, so combining them covers the whole course instead of one narrow window.

NS1 is present from the very first day of fever, while the virus is still circulating, and fades as the immune response takes over. IgM appears a few days in, as NS1 is declining, and points to recent or current infection. IgG comes later in a first infection but rises early and strongly in a repeat infection with a different serotype, and it persists for years, which is why on its own it reflects past exposure. Because the three markers hand over to one another, the panel is far less dependent on being tested on exactly the right day than any single test would be.

The pattern across the three is what your doctor reads. NS1 alone points to a very early infection; NS1 with IgM to an established acute one; IgM with IgG to an infection already a week or so along, or to a secondary infection; IgG alone to past exposure. That reading is always combined with the day your fever began, your travel history and your blood counts, because the panel identifies the infection but not its severity.

Dengue can deteriorate quickly, so this panel is not a substitute for being seen. Fever with recent travel to a country where dengue is common needs prompt medical assessment, not a self-booked test and a wait for the report. Seek emergency care immediately for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, or extreme lethargy or restlessness. These warning signs typically appear as the fever settles, which is exactly when people assume they are recovering.

    Why Get Tested?

Provides the most comprehensive dengue diagnostic coverage in a single test. Ideal for patients presenting with fever in dengue-endemic areas.

    Covering the whole illness

Because the three markers appear at different stages, the panel gives a usable answer whether you are tested on the first day of fever or a week later.

    Reducing the need to retest

One sample checks the early antigen and both antibodies, so fewer people need a second visit for repeat testing.

    Staging the infection

The combination of markers indicates roughly where in the course of dengue you are, which shapes what your doctor watches for next.

    Flagging repeat infection

An early, strong IgG suggests a second dengue infection, a pattern linked to greater risk of severe disease.

    When This Test Is Ordered

Reasons your doctor may request the Dengue Fever Combined Panel, Rapid test

Your doctor may order this test for any of the reasons below. Some are routine checks, others follow specific symptoms or an earlier result.

    Dengue-like symptoms

Fever with headache, eye pain, rash or severe body aches where dengue circulates.

Fever with a falling platelet count or a rising haematocrit.

    Travel to a dengue area

Fever starting during or within a couple of weeks of travel to a country where dengue is common.

    When the picture is unclear

Undifferentiated fever where dengue is one of several possibilities.

Suspected dengue where the day of illness is uncertain and a single-marker test might miss it.

    Preparation
    The short version
    No prep needed.

No fasting is needed and you can eat, drink and take your usual medication before the sample. Bring the date your fever started, since the panel is interpreted against the day of illness, and mention recent travel, any previous dengue episode and any flavivirus vaccination such as yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis or dengue. Keep drinking fluids, because dengue causes fluid loss and being well hydrated also makes the blood draw easier. If your doctor is monitoring platelets, expect a full blood count to be repeated over the following days even though this panel is not. If you are unwell now, be assessed clinically rather than waiting at home for the report.

    Understanding Your Results

    Dengue Fever Combined Panel, Rapid

A combined rapid screen for dengue (NS1 antigen and IgM/IgG antibodies).

    Non-Reactive / Negative

No infection or antibodies detected — a negative result.

    Reactive / Positive

Detected — a positive result. Please consult your physician for confirmation and next steps.

This test is reported descriptively rather than on a numeric scale — each finding below explains what your report may say.

This information is for general education only and is not medical advice. Reference ranges can vary by laboratory, age, sex, and individual factors. Always consult your physician or doctor to interpret your results.

Reading a High or Low Result

What a higher result can point to

    • Acute dengue in its earliest days, shown by a positive NS1 antigen.
    • Established acute dengue, shown by IgM with or without NS1.
    • Secondary dengue infection, typically with early and prominent IgG.
    • Past dengue infection or previous exposure, shown by IgG alone.
    • Cross-reaction from another flavivirus infection or vaccination affecting the antibody components.

These are possibilities, not diagnoses. A single value outside the reference range is interpreted alongside your symptoms, history and other tests — your doctor decides what it means for you.

    Limitations & Safety

What this test cannot tell you

    • A fully negative panel very early in a fever does not exclude dengue, and retesting may still be needed if symptoms continue.
    • The antibody components can cross-react with related flaviviruses such as Zika and Japanese encephalitis, or with vaccines against them.
    • NS1 is less reliably detected in secondary infections, where pre-existing antibody clears the antigen faster.
    • The panel identifies infection but gives no measure of severity: fever after travel to a dengue area needs prompt medical assessment, and severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, or extreme lethargy or restlessness need emergency care straight away.

    Risks of the blood draw

    • Mild bruising or brief soreness where the needle went in.
    • Occasional lightheadedness, which settles after a few minutes of rest.
    • Bleeding or infection at the site, which is rare with sterile single-use equipment.
    Key Points
    • 1This is a panel combining NS1 antigen with IgM and IgG antibodies in one sample.
    • 2The markers become detectable at different stages, so together they cover the early and later phases of the illness.
    • 3IgM indicates recent or current infection while IgG persists and usually reflects past exposure.
    • 4The pattern of which markers are positive helps place the infection in time; an early, strong IgG suggests a repeat infection.
    • 5Confirming dengue does not predict how the illness will behave: fever after travel needs prompt medical review, and warning signs appearing as the fever settles are an emergency.

Each marker is detectable in a different part of the illness. NS1 covers the first days, IgM the middle, and IgG the later phase or a repeat infection. Combining them means the result does not depend on catching exactly the right day.

It is a protein produced by the dengue virus itself and released into the blood during active infection, so it is direct evidence of the virus rather than of your immune response. It fades as antibodies take over.

Yes, if the sample is taken very early, before the antigen is detectable and before antibodies have formed. If fever continues, your doctor may repeat the testing and will manage you on the clinical picture in the meantime.

No. It confirms dengue but not its severity. The critical phase, usually as the fever breaks, is when doctors watch for warning signs such as persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, bleeding or a rapidly falling platelet count.
