This profile is a panel rather than a single analyte: it reports two apolipoproteins and the balance between them. Apo B is the structural protein of every particle that can deposit cholesterol in an artery wall — LDL, VLDL, IDL and Lp(a) — with one molecule per particle, so it works as a count of potentially harmful particles. Apo A1 is the defining protein of HDL, the particle that collects surplus cholesterol from tissues and returns it to the liver. The two therefore represent opposing arms of cholesterol traffic: delivery on one side, removal on the other.
